I could be wrong about this, but I doubt it.
Young people who were planning to follow a career in medicine or nursing could be forgiven for looking at the enormous stress that medical staff are facing due to coronavirus and thinking, “Maybe not.”
But you know, I doubt it; not many anyway.
I could be wrong (it wouldn’t be the first time) but it’s my opinion that anyone planning to work in a hospital will be so encouraged by the courage, the resolve, the sheer commitment of N.H.S. staff to saving lives, that they will feel inspired by their example, not put off by the pressure they’re under. If that’s you, I believe that you will feel more motivated than ever to follow your heart. People on a mission are not easily frightened off.
Having spent 34 years in the pharmaceutical industry, I can tell you from personal experience that the people responsible for developing a vaccine will be feeling immensely proud of the contribution they have made to the saving of millions of lives, even though they have not been under the same stress as front line N.H.S. staff. They won’t be bothered by the fact that no-one is out clapping their efforts. They were never in it for the applause. They won’t be put off by the accusations that they were only ever in it for the profit; that they have simply been exploiting the misfortune of the sick.
People on a mission are rarely people who are easily put off either by extreme stress or unfair criticism.
I have no idea what mission you’re on. It might have nothing to do with medicine and that’s okay. Medicine is not for everyone and it’s a good thing that it’s not. But I have a feeling that, if you’re reading this, you’re on a mission of some kind and, whatever it is, it’s going to involve something challenging, something that could be very demanding. And if I’m right about that, you have every reason to be proud of yourself and what you stand for.
This week’s tip, from “the coach who rocks” is that if you have a song to sing, a race that you just have to run, a vision for what you want to contribute to the world, you stick to it. Don’t compromise and, whatever you do, don’t be put off by people telling you that you shouldn’t.
Why shouldn’t you? You go for it my friend, because the world needs people like you and God bless you for it.
‘til next week,
